After moving from one county in Ohio to another, Jeanette saw her Food Assistance benefit drop to only $16 per month. This gave the frail senior fifty cents per day for food. She could not understand why she had been approved for so little assistance to support herself.

LAWO intervened for Jeanette, leading to a modest increase in her food allowance, but still not enough to live on. Advocates then requested a state hearing and negotiated on her behalf. It turned out that the department had improperly calculated Jeanette’s benefits. Her Food Assistance increased to a sustainable level, and Jeanette received retroactive payments as well. Her financial and nutritional status is much more secure.
